it has been 15 weeks since my last, ahh, entry.

in the last week i have seen dave matthews band, g. love and special sauce, jack johnson, michael franti, xavier rudd, eric bibb, elixer, the frames, cubanissimo, mia dyson, the violent femmes and some others.

i thought i didn't like any tea or coffee but found out that green tea is ok. it's nasty when you get to the bottom of the mug but i never even think about throwing it out. ok, well i think about it. my brother went to taiwan for a month and brought back real green tea. when he was over there, he was the first white person that a lot of people had seen.

bribie is beautiful, school is hard. i have to proove to myself that i can do this though. i am going to teach my 3 years at bribie and then travel. this means saving. my dream is to travel the world going to music festivals, i think i should put a "before i'm --" date on it though. before i'm 30?

i hope you're well.

this is one hot toy.

last weekend my folks and i drove up to bribie. we checked out some places for rent, went to the beaches, saw the school and some churches as we were driving past, went to an orchid show (yes, we went to an orchid show) and had some fish and chips for lunch. the fish was so good! i've told lots of people about that fish. seeing high school-aged kids walking around made me nervous though. actually, a lot of that trip made me nervous. but i guess i never expected it to be easy either.

today the band and i drove up to caboolture to do a workshop at a high school up there. we played 5 songs all up including a drumming piece and we taught the kids some drumming patterns and had everyone playing or dancing. everyone loves african music! alison was in the car with me (an hour and a half of driving both ways!) which i really appreciated. i really like alison. we had icecreams on the way home.

natalie's 21st was yesterday. i wanted to get her something that she could use her whole life, starting now, so i decided on a wool blanket. it's really beautiful (it's lindsay, which was my grandad's first name - so we can all recognise the tartan). today we had the hottest october temperatures on the east coast in 27 years! i should've gotten her a water gun.

here's the traditional cd list as it stands 3 days before my birthday:

the frames - burn the maps
the holmes brothers - simple truths
yo la tengo - i can hear the heart beating as one (thank you, james)
the dissociatives - self titled
the black keys - thickfreakness
music from the o.c. mix one
ben harper and the blind boys of alabama - there will be a light

the other day a girl told me a story about when she was in year 5 and she had to redo an entire project (the kind when you make a poster or something) the night before it was due because she had fallen asleep on her desk and drooled on it.

yesterday, the state education department and offered me a job teaching music and some social studies at bribie island state high for three years. yeah, an island. a little island with beaches, a national park, a great golf course, fishing... this, of course, means i will have to learn to play golf and fish. and that means my recreational habits will be the same as a 65 year old man. you know i would love? windsurfing. please ask me in 6 months time if i have learnt to windsurf, i am appointing you to hold me to it.

so bribie's about and hour away from my home, which is far enough away to be out of pockets and close enough that when i say "bye" to friends it won't really be bye.

i had to call ed qld back with yes/no on the same afternoon. i've never had a full-time job before. i think this means i am now a grown-up.

(this message was composed on Sat, Sep 27, 2003)

Dear FutureMe,

well, i am nearly 21. what was it like?

things i am looking forward to that will happen by the end of 2003 - i'll get my drivers license, i'll work out how to use grandad's mamiya, i'll have seen the frames play live (!!!), i'll have finished my first high school prac at Nambour, i will have started working at myer, i'll have had good times with friends

things that i hope have happened by the end of 2004 - i will have saved some money and made plans to travel to NZ, italy, france, the greek islands, ireland, scotland, blakeny, NY, the pacific islands...
i'll have been Rachels's bridesmaid! i will know what teaching is like, kabombo kombo will have played some gigs. i won't have to do so many assignments (!), i'll be able to do laps of the pool without getting puffed, i'll have seen some good movies, maybe it won't be so hard to hear God, i'll have seen u2 play live (!!!), maybe there will be a nice boy too.

Future things that have that excited-afriad feeling about them: moving out, moving away from everyone, especially Natalie, first year out.

Today is Harlee and Amy's engagement party.

try it.

also, RCmd - you've met the holmes brothers??

after two hours of sleep, i shouldn't have been able to talk as much and as fast as i did during the interview. nath said i did really well, so i'm happy. now i'm nearly no longer a student! now onto job apps.

it was his birthday on sunday and i made him a mix cd. all the music on it fits into man with acoustic guitar or funk categories. it's all about sly stone, man.

his mum asked me to give a speech at his party on saturday. it is going to be tricking balancing being honest with sounding like a sap.

do you have three spare minutes? in my story, Brandon was swinging for a living.
